The Red Bull Ring is a motorsport race track in the municipality of Spielberg in Styria, Austria. It was opened in 1969 as the Österreichring and was known as the GP Österreich in Zeltweg in the seventies. It was only from 1997 to 2003 that the circuit became the A1-Ring. After lengthy renovations, it was reopened on 15 May 2011.[1][2]
Zeltweg, which is only two kilometres away, is often given as the location of the circuit, although the circuit is located in the municipal area of Spielberg.[3] The first Austrian Grand Prix was held at the Zeltweg-Hinterstoisser air base in 1963, but it did not have World Championship status.[4] It was not until 1964 that the race in Zeltweg counted towards the World Automobile Championship.
